Characters Unite Award Winners

Janet is the Executive Artistic Director of award-winning Fort Lauderdale Children's Theatre where she oversees both the administrative and artistic components of the theatre. She has been in that position since 1999 and has worked at the theatre since 1990.

She teaches, directs and acts in the community and developed the theatre's comprehensive outreach program that now serves over 30,000 people each year. That program includes A Bridge From Me to You conflict resolution and character education program for public school fifth graders, From Page to Stage in-school literacy program and an Arts Infusion Program for classroom teachers to learn how to infuse the arts across the academic curriculum.

She creates partnerships with many cultural and social service organizations throughout South Florida. In one such partnership, she facilitates creative expression workshops for Deliver the Dream, a respite and retreat program for families dealing with a terminal illness or health crisis. Janet also works with special needs and at-risk populations, leading workshops at mental health facilities, residence centers for juvenile offenders, and independent living programs. Her ongoing work in the community reflects her assertions as an advocate for the arts: the arts have the power to transform lives, to heal, to celebrate to question and to connect.

Currently, she serves as the Chair of Broward County's Arts Connection, Creative Economy Chair for the State of Florida's Broward Days and is the Past Chair of the Cultural Executives Committee where she also served on the Cultural Council of Broward County. She is an active member of Leadership Broward and Broward Women's Alliance. Janet is a graduate of Swarthmore College with a double major in Theatre and Psychology and currently serves as President Elect of the Alumni Council.
