Joey is a 16-year-old junior and the founder of The Equality Project.
As an openly gay student at a typical public high school, he realized that schools needed change. He decided to follow the advice of his inspiration, Gandhi, and be the change he wished to see in the world. He began by circulating a petition to stop homophobia, but then noticed many other forms of discrimination present in his school. He broadened the group’s spectrum by creating The Equality Project and joined GLSEN. Joey has spoken out for the Safe Schools Improvement Act and presents regularly in high schools and colleges. He has been featured on NBC News, ABC, CBS and BBC News and in People and many newspapers. He hopes that through student activism he will truly be able to say that the kids of today became the future of tomorrow.
